Santa Margalida (Mallorca)
Mallorca's best-known spot: peaks over rock and sand in the Bay of Alcúdia.
Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza have coasts facing every direction, and that's their great advantage: almost any Mediterranean storm leaves waves on some beach. The north coasts of Mallorca and Menorca get the north and north-east swells raised by the tramontana and mistral, and the southern bays work with southerly winds.
The season runs from October to April; in summer the sea is usually flat. The waves are short-lived and change fast, so check the forecast every day and move around the island. Water drops to 14 °C in winter: a 4/3 in the cold months and a 3/2 in autumn and spring.
