Surf spots in Scotland

Scotland is the cold frontier of European surfing and one of its best-kept secrets. The north coast, between Thurso and Bettyhill, has world-class slab reefs such as Thurso East, one of the best rights in Europe; the Hebrides and Tiree take the Atlantic head-on on almost empty white-sand beaches; and the east coast, from Aberdeen to East Lothian, wakes up with North Sea storms.

Each coast needs a different wind: the north a southerly, the west an easterly and the east a south-westerly, the most common one. The best season is September to April, with very short days in midwinter. Water is 7–9 °C in winter and 12–14 °C in summer: a 6/5 hooded wetsuit, booties and gloves, and plenty of respect for the ocean.
