Surf spots in Normandy

Normandy isn't the first place that comes to mind for surfing, but it gets waves fairly often. The west coast of the Cotentin peninsula, between La Hague and Carteret, takes Atlantic swells head-on as they come up the Channel, with long, wild beaches such as Siouville, Sciotot or Le Rozel. Further east, the white cliffs of the Pays de Caux hide lefts over pebbles at Étretat and Yport.

The tides are among the biggest in Europe and completely change each spot, so plan your session with the tide table. The Cotentin coast works with an easterly wind; the Pays de Caux with a southerly. The water is cold most of the year (9–10 °C in winter and about 17 °C in summer): a 5/4 wetsuit with booties in winter.
