Larvik (Vestfold)
Southern Norway's spot and Oslo surfers' go-to: storm waves on the Skagerrak.
Norway offers some of the most spectacular surfing in Europe: beaches between mountains and fjords, northern lights in winter and midnight sun in summer. There are three main areas: Jæren, south of Stavanger, with long beaches open to the North Sea; the Stad peninsula, on the west coast, with bays such as Hoddevik; and the Lofoten Islands, above the Arctic Circle, where Unstad has become world-famous.
Swells come from the North Atlantic and the Norwegian Sea, mainly from September to April. Each area has its wind: Jæren works with an easterly, Stad with a south-easterly and Lofoten with a southerly. The water is 5–7 °C in winter and 12–16 °C in summer, depending on latitude: a 6/5 hooded wetsuit, booties and gloves. Many beaches are remote: respect nature, take your rubbish home and check the forecast carefully before driving.
