Saint-Jean-de-Monts
A huge, gentle beach sheltered by the Île d'Yeu: perfect for learning.
Vendée has about 250 km of coastline between Noirmoutier and La Tranche-sur-Mer, with sand beaches, dunes and some rock slabs that produce high-quality waves, such as La Sauzaie at Brétignolles-sur-Mer, the most famous spot in the area. Les Sables-d'Olonne, start of the Vendée Globe sailing race, is the main town.
Most of the coast faces west or south-west, so it works with a west or north-west swell and an easterly wind. The Île d'Yeu blocks part of the swell reaching Saint-Jean-de-Monts and Saint-Gilles, which are softer; to the south, La Tranche-sur-Mer faces south and is the refuge on stormy days. Water is 11–12 °C in winter and around 19–20 °C in summer.
