Andalusia's Mediterranean coast, from Málaga to Almería, faces south onto the Alboran Sea. It gets no Atlantic swell, but the easterly (levante) and westerly (poniente) storms funnelled through the Strait raise short waves that support a very active surf community, especially in Málaga.
Good days are few and come at short notice: they usually arrive in autumn and winter, ideally with the northerly 'terral' wind setting in after the storm. Water is 15 °C in winter and 23–24 °C in summer: a 3/2 is enough almost all year.
