Teguise (Lanzarote)
A 6 km beach below the Famara cliffs: Lanzarote's surf hub and its best place to learn.
The Canary Islands are the «Hawaii of Europe»: volcanic lava reefs that take North Atlantic swells head-on, warm water all year (18 °C in winter, 22–23 °C at the end of summer) and world-class waves such as El Quemao on Lanzarote, El Confital on Gran Canaria or the Lobos right off Fuerteventura. There are also sand beaches for learning, such as Famara, Las Canteras or El Cotillo.
The main season runs from October to March, when North Atlantic storms send north-west swell to the north and west coasts. In summer the north-east trade winds blow hard, ruining many north shores but turning Fuerteventura, Pozo or El Médano into windsurf and kite paradises; the south coasts then get the southerly swells. The reefs are sharp: booties are highly recommended, and so is total respect for the locals, who surf these waves all year.
