Somo
Santander's surf-school beach: miles of sand with peaks for every level.
Somo is a beach over 4 km long facing the bay of Santander, and probably where more people have learned to surf than anywhere else in northern Spain. The sandbanks spread lefts and rights along the whole beach, so there's always room if you walk a little.
Santander's headlands filter part of the north-west swell, so waves are usually friendlier than at Liencres or Los Locos. With a southerly or south-easterly wind and a north swell it gets really good; on big winter days the outer banks offer walls for shortboards.

Relaxed vibe. It gets busy in summer and at weekends, especially in front of the surf schools: walk a few hundred metres and you'll find quieter peaks.
Surfing style
Progression and longboarding on small days; turns on the outer-bank walls when the swell picks up.
Hazards
Rip currents near the estuary mouth and in the channels between banks. In winter, heavy waves and cold water.
