Surf spots in Denmark

Denmark has the most active surf scene in Scandinavia, centred on Thy, in north-west Jutland: the area between Hanstholm and Agger is known as «Cold Hawaii» for its boulder reefs and powerful winter waves, and Klitmøller has hosted a windsurfing World Cup event for years. Further south and north there are long beaches by breakwaters, such as Hvide Sande, Løkken or Hirtshals.

The waves come from the North Sea and are almost always generated by nearby wind, so conditions change fast: the ideal is to surf when a westerly eases off or swings east. Tides are almost non-existent. The water drops to 3–5 °C in winter and reaches 16–17 °C in August: a 6/5 hooded wetsuit, booties and gloves for most of the year.
