Santa Marinella (Roma)
Lazio's best-known reef right, on the Santa Marinella shoreline.
Lazio's coast, from Civitavecchia to Gaeta, opens onto the Tyrrhenian Sea and gets south-west and west storms. Rome has one of the biggest surf communities in Italy, spread between the reefs of Santa Marinella to the north, the beaches of Ostia and Fregene by the city, and the dunes of the Circeo park to the south.
Waves come mostly from October to April, as one- or two-day swells that clean up when the wind swings north-east. Water is 14 °C in winter: a 4/3 wetsuit.
