Surf spots in the Lisbon area

Lisbon is one of the few European capitals with good waves less than half an hour away: by train to Carcavelos, over the bridge to Costa da Caparica or through the hills to the Sintra beaches. There are waves for everyone, from the Caparica surf schools to the Cascais-line reefs or Praia Grande's powerful right.

The trick is orientation. The Sintra coast, Guincho and Costa da Caparica face west and work with an easterly wind; the Cascais line, between Carcavelos and Estoril, faces south, so it only gets big winter swells, but it handles the northerly wind, the most common one, especially in summer. Water is 14–15 °C in winter and 18–19 °C in summer.
