Surf spots in North-East England

The North Sea coast between Northumberland and Yorkshire is one of the UK's most surprising surf areas: castles above the beach, such as Bamburgh, slab reefs such as Hartley or Staithes and a very active surf scene in Tynemouth, near Newcastle, and in Saltburn, in Yorkshire.

The coast faces east, so it works with the north or north-east swells generated by North Sea storms, and its big advantage is that the prevailing west or south-west wind blows offshore here. The swells are shorter-period than in the Atlantic, but when they line up there are high-quality waves. The water is cold most of the year, 6–8 °C in winter and about 14 °C in summer: a 5/4 or 6/5 hooded wetsuit, booties and gloves.
