Medulin (Istria)
Reefs on Cape Kamenjak, the southern tip of Istria, where Croatian surfing began.
The Adriatic is a narrow, almost enclosed sea, but when the jugo, the south-easterly wind, blows, it builds windswell over hundreds of kilometres that reaches the coasts of Istria and Dalmatia. Croatia's surf community is small and enthusiastic, concentrated in southern Istria and around Split.
The waves are short and last as long as the storm, almost always between October and March. Ideally you surf just as the jugo eases or swings to bura, the north-easterly. Water drops to 12–13 °C in winter: a 4/3 or 5/4 wetsuit. Slovenia's coast, well sheltered in the Gulf of Trieste, has hardly any surfable waves.
