Lège-Cap-Ferret
The ocean beaches of the Cap Ferret peninsula, facing the Arcachon Bay.
The Gironde coast, between Cap Ferret and the mouth of the estuary at Soulac, is more than 100 km of wild beaches, dunes and pine forests. Lacanau, an hour from Bordeaux, is its surf capital and hosts an international contest every summer; to the north and south there are much emptier beaches, such as Le Porge, Carcans, Hourtin or Le Gurp.
As in Landes, the coast faces west: west or north-west swell and an easterly wind, which usually blows in the morning. The sandbanks change with every storm and almost every beach has strong currents, especially in big swell, when they close out. As a curiosity, on the Dordogne river you can surf the mascaret, a tidal bore that travels upriver on the biggest tides.
