Hossegor
For many, the best beach break in Europe: fast, heavy barrels in very shallow water.
Landes is more than 100 km of straight beach between Biarritz and the Arcachon Bay, with dunes and pine forests behind it and sandbanks that change with every storm. In the middle is Hossegor, one of the capitals of European surfing and the usual home of the world tour's French event.
The whole coast faces west, so it works with a west or north-west swell and an easterly wind. Off Hossegor and Capbreton, the Gouf submarine canyon focuses the swell's energy, which is why the waves here are bigger and more powerful than at neighbouring beaches. The best season is autumn, from September to November: the first swells arrive, there's an offshore breeze in the morning and the water is still mild. In summer, lifeguarded swimming zones take priority and surfing is limited to signposted areas.
